SharePoint 2010 provides a number of new, exciting and enhanced capabilities to business users, and for many organisations there is an obvious business benefit to upgrade from an existing SharePoint implementation.  But how do you know when it’s the right time for your organization?

Before you embark on an upgrade to SharePoint2010, it’s important you develop an upgrade plan. 

Firstly, you should undertake an analysis of your current implementation, and complete a current state “health-check”.  This will involve a review of the existing SharePoint infrastructure and related technical context and understanding the current hardware, software configuration and customisations, SharePoint farm topologies, non-functional capabilities, system integrations and inter-system dependencies and also the existing release and configuration processes and underlying governance approaches currently employed.

At a business level, it’s important you then understand the target functional and non-functional requirements and identify additional capability benefits that SharePoint 2010 may bring to your organization.  For example, using the new managed metadata services to organize your corporate taxonomy.  Future projects will also be understood and collectively the target state will be defined.

Once the current and target states are defined, a gap analysis should be performed to produce a SharePoint 2010 upgrade strategy.  This will ensure the infrastructure dependencies, and pre-upgrade activities required are correctly identified in order to maximise the success and impact of your SharePoint 2010 deployment.
