Coca-Cola Amatil

The Client

Coca-Cola Amatil is a major Australian Multinational Company. It is the country’s largest manufacturer and distributor of soft drinks and other alcohol-free beverages, and is the market leader in the industry. With operations in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and South Korea, Coca-Cola Amatil is the largest bottler of Coca-Cola trademarked products in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Challenge

As a result of multiple brand websites being created on an annual basis by multiple brand owners and multiple regions, there was an inherent inefficiency in the process. Many of the external brand websites had very similar backend functional areas (login, competitions, events, etc.), but the creation of a new website in one region did not necessarily leverage the existing functionality that had been created in another. There was an large cost saving optimization opportunity from an IT perspective in establishing a global reusability program. Coca Cola Asia Pacific were keen to realise that opportunity.

The Solution

In order to correctly implement a reusability program is it first important to understand the granularity of this reuse, are we referring to images, html templates or entire sites? Unique World held several brainstorming sessions with Coca Cola and established that the Business Service was the level of abstraction appropriate for reuse. This resulting recommendation was a standards based Service Oriented Architectural (SOA) that would enable the reusability of core business services across the variety of infrastructural and application platforms (JAVA, Domino, .NET). Along with this architectural recommendations piece was implementation consultancy that provided methodology and governance frameworks to be honored in order to realize the benefits of this architecture in the multiple regions in the Asia Pacific region.

The Benefit

By reducing the amount of work required to delivery consumer websites, Coca Cola will be able to dramatically reduce the cost of implementation and support. This enables the organization to repurpose these funds into creating high impact, high quality websites and not to be burning effort on re-inventing the wheel each time a region releases a new brand website.
