Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism
The Client
The Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism provides advice and policy support to the Australian Government regarding Australia's resources, energy and tourism sectors. The Department develops and delivers policies to increase Australia's international competitiveness, consistent with the principles of environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
The Challenge
A new department created after the 2007 Federal election the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism (RET) required a website to publish information about the Department's policies and programs.
Australian Government departments and agencies are required to apply consistent branding and placement of corporate elements across websites they publish. Government Agencies must conform to World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) and Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) web publishing best practice guidelines.
It was necessary to ensure the site architecture shared common elements across all sections of the site; whereby different branding was applied to identify content ownership and location within the overall site.
The Solution
www.ret.gov.au was developed using MOSS 2007. This enabled the quick and effective implementation of design and functional requirements, using a combination of out of the box MOSS 2007 features and customised development. The information published to the new site (as represented by the site definition, navigation, templates, content types and associated content) needed to be readily accessible, maintained and managed. MOSS 2007 offered the flexibility, stability and scalability to allow RET to publish the necessary policies and programs to their target customer base.
The Benefit
www.ret.gov.au was launched within days of site design and requirements being installed and customised. The development of content types allowed the Departments content publishers to create and edit content that was easily migrated to the final site upon launch; resulting in disparate pieces of information sharing common and readily search-able metadata. The adoption of MOSS 2007 empowers RET to readily and quickly manage and maintain www.ret.gov.au with minimal IT assistance and the associated overheads.
